| [on being cast so often as "heavies"] I don't think it's my face--at least I don't think I look like a heel . . . I suppose the real reason I was originally cast as a villain is because I'm a big man. You'll notice villains are usually brawny, a fact which explains the slang term "the heavy", |

| Because he so effectively and frequently played heavies, teenagers in the 1940s and 1950s who felt put upon by authorities would say "Don't give me that Barton MacLane". |
| His great-grandfather Henry Joel McLane served in the Confederate 17th South Carolina Infantry in the US Civil War. |
| Was mentioned (not so favorably) in an Allan Sherman song entitled "Oh Boy". |
| He had two children, William MacLane and Martha MacLane. |
| Best known to the television generation as Gen. Peterson on I Dream of Jeannie (1965). |
| He played several musical instruments, including the violin, piano, and guitar. He was a published playwright and author, producing many plays, and starring in 'Black John' on Broadway. |
| Was an outstanding college football player at Wesleyan University |
