Biography

Cheryl James was born on the 28th of March, 1966 in Brooklyn, New York. Her father was a transit worker, and her mother a bank manager. Cheryl James attended Grover Cleveland High School and graduated in 1983. Following her High School graduation, she enrolled at Queensborough Community College to study nursing.

Career

In 1985, Cheryl James met Sandra Denton and made friends with her. Hurby Azor who was her then-boyfriend approached them and asked them to record a rap for a class project. Quite impressed that they did well, they decided to take their trial serious and turn it into a career. With Hurby Azor as their manager, they formed the group, Super Nature which was eventually renamed as Salt-N-Pepa. Later on, Latoya Hanson joined as their DJ but was later replaced with Deidra Roper (DJ Spinderella) in 1987. And she remained a part of the group until 2019. Deidra Roper was fired from the group.

The group released several studio albums including Hot, Cool & Vicious (1986), A Salt with a Deadly Pepa (1988), and so on. Cheryl James co-starred in the 1993 thriller comedy film, Who’s the Man? In 1997, she recorded Stomp with gospel artists Kirk Franklin and God’s Property Gospel Choir. The Salt-N-Pepa were the first female rap act to have gold, platinum, and multi-platinum albums and also win a Grammy.

Cheryl James appeared on VH1’s inaugural Hip Hop Honors program in November 2004, along with Pepa, but they didn’t perform. On September 22, 2005, they performed (first performance as the Salt-N-Pepa group since 1999) at the second Hip Hop Honors, performing their hit Whatta Man. In 2009, Cheryl James was featured in the Generation Gospel Exclusive on 106 & Gospel.

However, their union produced two children; Corin and Chapele Wray. She considers herself a feminist and emphasized in an interview that women need to avoid complete emotional and financial dependence on men. Tupac also referenced Cheryl James and her daughter in his song, Keep Ya Head Up.
